Since 1999 the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) organises an annual event, the European Consumer Day, in close cooperation with the European Commission and the Member State holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Ms Meglena Kuneva (link to speech), Commissioner for Consumer Protection, Ms Marianne Thyssen MEP (link to speech) and Karel Machotka (link to speech), representing the Czech Presidency, joined the EESC President Mr Mario Sepi (link to speech), to open the conference. The key theme of the event was "Consumer rights",a subject that is currently of crucial importance for both European consumers and businesses as they try to fully benefit from Europe's Single Market. More than 250 representatives of consumer associations and the business sector gathered to discuss the Commission's draft Directive on "Consumer Rights" that aims to improve the functioning of the business-to-consumer Internal Market by enhancing consumer confidence and reducing business reluctance to engage in cross-border trade. participants The Committee is currently preparing its opinion on this Directive, taking into consideration the conclusions of the European Consumer Day.
